The present Education system fails to enlighten the conscience of the students. Over emphasis is given to competence while character building is neglected.  We try to transform the child into a money making machine. Education has become only a means to get a well-paid job. We are creating neurotic individuals with ‘big head’ and ‘small hearts’ who have no sense of service or patriotism. Education at present is mostly commercialized. Many Educational Institutes are presently established to earn money rather than groom responsible citizen and enlightened leaders for future. Values are caught rather than taught, example will preach louder than words. Having a number of degrees from different universities doesn’t make one Educated and cultured. An illiterate may be more Educated and cultured than a literate since he may possess greater human qualities. He may have self respect and respect for fellow human beings far better than the learned People. Education is the process of making a child into an individual as an useful member and responsible person of the society. Today we lack such Educated persons.

Today we have forgotten the rules of social living ( live and let live). The social fabric is torn badly. Social intolerance, violence and corruption are at their peak. Human lives have no values. Of late we read in the news papers that some well Educated people also are part of the crimes and corruption. Gruesome mindless killings, kidnapping people for money and other forms of torture indicate our living in medieval age. Basic requirements of life such as Education, drainage and roads etc are bad. The cities are dirty due to indiscriminate throwing of garbage by us on roads. The traffic chaos is so bad to describe. The fear and apprehension is quite apparent on people’s faces.  Still we consider ourselves to be called as Educated.

None of these things should have ever happened if we were Educated in the real sense. The aim of Education should be not just to award degrees but to make one a responsible citizen, who will in turn respect fellow human being and have a sense of involvement in the community to which he belongs. Book knowledge alone does not make man literate. In my opinion the truly  literate will be men or women of character. They will be rich in all the positive virtues of life. Further they will be confident to face any challenges in life.

Folks please post your views and thoughts as well…

I certainly agree with the writer. This is also true because of the Nuclear Families which can be better said as Koopastha Mandooka Familes. As such people have become too selfish and narrow minded in their attitude. Further present Education System has made things worst. But still we are far better than Western Countries where the definition of Family is too complex  and the less said about their Education System the better (particularly their School Education). Film Industry, Print and Electronic Media can work wonders provided there is a will to do so.
